SortMe

About SortMe

We started with a spreadsheet too

Created by Kiwis, for Kiwis — for New Zealand households who need more than a budgeting app.

Carl Thompson, SortMe founder and CEO

Origin story

The problem followed Carl home

Carl Thompson spent years building TradeGecko, the inventory platform that Intuit bought for $150M NZD. Software that gave businesses one clear picture of everything they owned and owed. Then he came home to Auckland and noticed something odd: his own household ran on nine spreadsheet tabs, four bank logins, two KiwiSavers and a folder of insurance PDFs nobody had opened since 2021.

Budgeting software sucks, and there wasn't anything designed to help the household with more complexity in their finances. The ones with the mortgage, the company, the trust, the investments, the kids. You don't need a lecture about coffee. You need every part of your money in one place and a straight answer about what to do next.

Our mission

To create opportunity through prosperity for families.

Prosperity isn't a lottery win. For most families it's a hundred unglamorous decisions made slightly better: the fixed rate renegotiated on time, the KiwiSaver fund that fits, the $210 of subscriptions nobody was using. SortMe exists to make those decisions visible, then make them obvious.

Built for here

New Zealand first

SortMe is built for how money works here: NZ banks (connected through Akahu, which uses official open banking APIs), KiwiSaver, NZ investment platforms, fixed-rate mortgage cycles, trusts and LTCs. One day we'd like to sort money for households well beyond these islands. Today, we're all-in on New Zealand, and it shows in the product.
