Manual expense tracking dies by Thursday. Automatic tracking doesn't.

Every expense-tracking method that required manual entry fails the moment life gets busy. The notes app, the shoebox of receipts, the app you have to open after every coffee. SortMe flips it: your banks feed it, AI sorts it, and your only job is to glance at the answer. Transaction reports make understanding your cashflow quick and painless.

What gets tracked, and how

Every dollar, filed properly

AI categorisation that gets NZ.

Countdown is groceries, Z is fuel, and your IRD payments and refunds are recognised and categorised automatically, income included. When something’s ambiguous, AI works it out from context.

Spend Overview.

One screen for the current pay cycle: what’s come in, what’s gone out, which categories are running hot.

Notes and attachments on any transaction.

Photograph the receipt, staple it to the transaction, add a note (“client lunch, deductible”). It’s there at tax time, exactly where it should be.

Tags, in bulk.

Tag anything (#renovation, #sidehustle, #holiday2026), apply tags in bulk, and manage them all from one place. Your reporting, your labels.

Filter by account, or by entity.

Look at just the joint account, just the business card, or just one entity’s books, in a tap. Handy when the business spending and the groceries share a bank feed.

Transfer detection.

Moving money between your own accounts isn’t spending, and SortMe knows it, so no more double-counted “expenses” polluting your totals.

Accountant-ready

An end-of-year export your accountant will love

One click exports your transactions to CSV with every category and tag intact. Side-hustle expenses tagged through the year, receipts attached, IRD income already identified. Your accountant gets order instead of archaeology, and you stop paying professional rates for data entry. Running a sole-trader operation, rental or company alongside personal money? SortMe Pro keeps them as separate books with deductible tagging and a one-click End-of-Financial-Year pack.

Personal & business

Keep business expenses separate, even from the same account

If you contract, freelance or run a side hustle, plenty of your business spending goes on the personal credit card. SortMe Pro lets you set those transactions apart as they happen and keep them in their own set of books beside your personal money, so the Shopify payouts, the courier fees and the home-office share are already separated when end of financial year arrives.

You tag a deductible in the moment it appears rather than reconstructing it in April, and spends over $500 prompt you to photograph the receipt while you still remember what it was for. Come end of financial year, your accountant gets one pack in the format they asked for.

  • Separate books per entity: trust, LTC, company, sole-trader operation.
  • Deductible tagging as you spend, from any account.
  • Receipt prompts on $500+ spends, attached to the transaction.
  • One accountant-ready export per entity at year end.

SortMe Pro tracks and prepares, so it stops short of invoicing, payroll and GST. If you run a trading company with staff, keep your accounting software and let SortMe handle the record keeping around it.

The leak finder

The expenses you forgot you had

SortMe's AI subscription detection finds the recurring charges hiding in your statements: the streaming service nobody's watched since summer, the app that renewed itself again. It's smart enough to skip look-alikes such as Afterpay instalments. On average, users find $2,371 in cancelled subscriptions.

Beyond tracking

Seeing where it went is step one. Knowing what to do next is the point.

Tracking shows the grocery bill is up 18%. SortMe goes further: it looks across everything you've connected (accounts, mortgage, KiwiSaver, investments) and surfaces, in plain language, what that means. Ask SortMe AI anything about your own spending ("how much did the bach trip really cost?") and get an answer from your real transactions, with context remembered between conversations. When the question outgrows an app, SortMe connects you with a vetted human adviser. That's the difference between a tracker and a financial concierge.

Expense tracking questions, answered straight

Is it safe to connect my bank account to an expense tracker?
With SortMe, yes: access is read-only, so it can never move money or make a payment. Data is encrypted with AES-256, and SortMe has passed a Google Security Audit. All connections run through Akahu, which uses official open banking APIs for most banks. See /data-security.
Which banks does SortMe track expenses from?
ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, Westpac, TSB and SBS, plus KiwiSaver balances, Sharesies, Kernel and other investment platforms. Foreign-currency accounts convert to NZD automatically, and CSV import covers the rest.
Do I have to enter expenses manually?
No, that’s the whole idea. Transactions flow in from your banks and AI categorises them. You can add notes, receipts and tags when you want the detail, but the tracking itself runs without you.
Why do I have to pay? Aren’t there free trackers?
Free trackers either make you do the data entry or make money from your data. SortMe charges a subscription so it works for you alone, and you can try everything for $1 for 7 days, with a money-back guarantee if you don’t find $500 of savings in your first 30 days.
Can I track business expenses as well as personal?
Yes, and that is what SortMe Pro is for. Every entity you own (a company, trust, LTC or sole-trader operation) gets its own set of books beside your personal money, so business spending stays separated even when it lands in the same bank account. You tag deductibles as they appear, $500+ spends prompt a receipt photo, and each entity exports its own accountant pack at year end. Pro stops short of invoicing, payroll and GST, so a trading company with staff will still want accounting software beside it.
Does it work for couples?
Yes. Household sharing gives you and your partner one shared view of spending across both your banks, so no more “what was this $240 at Mitre 10?” texts.
We’re paid fortnightly. Do the numbers line up?
Yes. Spend Overview and budgets run on your real pay cycle, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, so “this cycle’s spending” always matches your actual pay period.
How is this different from my bank’s app or a spreadsheet?
Your bank’s app shows one bank, uncategorised. A spreadsheet shows whatever you remembered to type. SortMe shows every account across every bank, categorised by AI, with receipts attached and a CSV export ready for your accountant. Then it shows you what to do next.
